Safe and Healthy Halloween
10.26.2011

Have a Safe and Healthy Halloween!

Trick or Treating should be one of the great adventures of Halloween for kids!  Extra sweets can promote extra weight and tooth decay.  Two Rivers Public Health Department would like to share some tips to help keep you and your child healthy during this Halloween holiday.
·        Small children should never go out alone on Halloween.  Always make sure an older sibling or adult is with them.  The exercise will be good for all of you!
·        Treat your kids to a healthy Halloween dinner before going out and they will be less likely to eat the candy they collect before you have a chance to check it.
·        Limit their sugary treat intake – be a good role model and limit yours too – promote good health for your family through both your diet and physical activity.
·        Instead of sugary treats – hand out pencils, temporary tattoos, sugar-free gum, bubbles, or granola bars – have your child help pick them out.
·        Help your child pick out a costume that will be safe.  Make sure it is fire proof, and the eye holes are large enough for good vision.  If you can, use make-up instead of a mask.
  • Remind your child to stop only at familiar houses in your own neighborhood unless they are accompanied by an adult. Instruct your child to never enter the home of a stranger or get into their car.
  • Know what activities your child will be attending, such as a party, school or mall function.  Make sure you set a time for them to return home.
  • Instruct your children that animal cruelty and destroying property are not “tricks” and are not acceptable.  Both are punishable by law and will not be tolerated.
