Red Ribbon Week
10.21.2011

CNCASA helps students celebrate Red Ribbon Week!

In 1988, Red Ribbon Week was nationally recognized by President Ronald and First Lady Nancy Reagan to honor Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena,   who was killed by Mexican Drug Cartels in 1985.  Today, Red Ribbon Week is the last full week of October and is celebrated from coast to coast in communities and schools nation wide. The common pledge is: “I pledge to make healthy choices, to be a positive role model for my friends, and to support the mission of Red Ribbon Week “No Use of Illegal Drugs”.

The Central Nebraska Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CNCASA) which covers Dawson, Gosper, Phelps, Kearney, Harlan and Franklin Counties, is sponsoring the current Red Ribbon projects:

-Working with schools to provide alcohol and drug free activities for the week of October 22nd-30th. Projects include educational movies, speakers, trivia questions, signing pledge cards to be drug and alcohol free, and providing educational materials to communities.

-The 6 county seat mayors (Holdrege, Lexington, Alma, Minden, Franklin and Elwood) each signed a proclamation stating that their communities would be observing Red Ribbon Week.

Take action in your home:

-Ask your children about activities that are going on in their school during Red Ribbon Week

-Talk to your kids/youth about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

-Don’t provide illegal drugs or alcohol to your children/youth.

-Be a good role model to youth by modeling responsible alcohol use.

-If you know of someone struggling with a drug or alcohol problem, encourage them to seek help from their physician or counselor.
